How Useful Is The Kitchen Mama Can Opener?

Published

on

In recent years, there has been a proliferation of kitchen gadgets available online that nobody really needs per se. These devices of questionable utility typically become popularized on TikTok, or, before that, Buzzfeed. They have their Warholian “15 minutes of [Internet] fame,” then their creators are left with pallets of unwanted inventory.

It will be interesting to see if the Kitchen Mama electric can opener goes the same way. In theory, you are not likely to get much use out of this “two-tap” kitchen gizmo. These days, almost every can that needs opening has a ring pull, leaving the manual can openers for the few that do not. I suppose traditional can openers can be challenging to use in such cases, especially since younger people are not likely to have much practice. But the Kitchen Mama can opener is significantly more expensive than a regular can opener ($30 compared to $11 or $12), and you have to wonder if it is really worth it.

Kitchen Mama Electric Can Opener: Open Your Cans with A Simple Push of Button – No Sharp Edge, Food-Safe and Battery Operated Handheld Can Opener — $28.99

The Kitchen Mama can opener is one of the top-sellers on Amazon for a reason. It is not kidding when it says it is easy to use! You simply place it on the top of your can, press a button to open the can, then press the button again when it makes a full trip around the can’s edge. No twisting, no physical strength or dexterity required.

For this reason, the Kitchen Mama is phenomenal for people with disabilities. If you have arthritis or any other condition that limits strength or mobility, opening a can is no easy task, and that includes cans with tabs. Comparatively, pressing a button twice is a cinch. Expect the Kitchen Mama to catch on with people with physical challenges looking to be more independent. With everyone else? Not so much.
