Insulated Wine Bottle Chillers Make Ice Buckets Obsolete

Published

In the year 2021, are you even drinking a cold beverage if it is not chilled in a vacuum-insulated cooler? Once the domain of campers, hikers, and other outdoorsmen using their Yetis and CamelBaks for water storage, vacuum insulation is now everywhere. You can drink your coffee out of a vacuum-insulated coffee mug, your wine out of a vacuum-insulated wine tumbler, even your margs out of a vacuum-insulated margarita glass. All of these stainless steel, double-walled contraptions keep liquids cold for way longer than I would ever need.

The latest trend is the insulated wine bottle chiller. Not long ago, people used ice buckets to protect their rosés and their champagnes from the hot summer heat. The wine bottle chiller is an updated piece of technology. It does not require ice, and therefore it cannot melt itself. This means it can keep your bottle of wine cold for hours.

There are many such wine bottle chillers available on Amazon. Recently, however, I came upon a different sort of design. This vacuum-insulated wine bottler chiller from a brand called Huski actually attaches to the wine bottle with so-called Flexi-lock technology. In other words, it is a novel sort of ice bucket that actually continues to keep the wine cold even as you pour.

Huski Wine Cooler | Premium Iceless Wine Chiller | Keeps Wine Cold up to 6 Hours | Award Winning Design | New Wine Accessory | Fits Some Champagne Bottles | Perfect Gift for Wine Lovers (Stainless) — $69.99

It comes as no surprise that Huski’s Amazon listing boasts a slew of design awards:

MULTI-AWARD WINNING DESIGN – Good Design Award Winner 2019, Best Design Awards Silver 2019 & Best New Product, People’s Choice Awards 2019, NZ Gift Fair.

At $70, the Huski wine chiller is more than twice as expensive as the more basic Villa & Marx design. This is fair considering it promises to keep the wine cold for twice as long—a total of 6 hours. While this may seem like an unnecessarily long time, this is actually pretty useful for bottles that you aren’t drinking right away. Or if you are keeping it our for guests at a garden party or picnic.

Furthermore, the latch design means that it is adjustable to fit bottles of different sizes:

Fits most traditional champagne bottles like Moët & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot, G.H.Mumm, Laurent-Perrier, Taittinger, Perrier-Jouët, Louis Roederer and many more. DOES NOT FIT Dom Pérignon, Bollinger, Krug, Korbel or some other wider or taller bottles.

No matter which version you go with, the days of filling up buckets of ice is over. Neither of these wine bottle chillers even needs to be kept in the freezer between uses to keep cold.
