Add this to the list of kitchen gizmos I didn’t know I needed. Cherries are a classic summer fruit, but looking for a polite place to spit out the pits can be a hassle. Unless you participate in one of those Cherry Pit Spitting competitions, you would be better off if they were pitted for you.
A cherry pitter can help you do that yourself. It works basically like a hole punch—you line up the core of the cherry with the piercer tool, and press down. Now your cherry is safe for consumption, no spitting required.
These useful tools can also double as olive pitters. For some reason, spitting out an olive core has always seemed ruder to me than spitting out a cherry core. With one of these, you have the luxury of avoiding both situations.
If you are a serious cherry eater (or more probably a baker who likes to decorate concoctions with cherries), you can actually get a cherry pitter that will remove six stones at once!
I happen to think the first one is a little less decadent, but if you are in need of a lot of cherries, the “six-hole punch” can speed up the process. These are also ideal if you are feeding your kids cherries: You do not want them accidentally swallowing the pit!
