Amazon’s Bestselling Beckham Bed Pillows Are NOT Good

Normally, we use our pulpit at We Know Products to tell our readers about items we recommend, but we understand that sometimes negative product reviews are just as, if not more, useful to the modern online shopper. With that in mind, I want to warn you against one of the most popular products on all of Amazon: these bestselling bed pillows from a brand called Beckham.

Beckham Hotel Collection Bed Pillows for Sleeping – Queen Size, Set of 2 – Cooling, Luxury Gel Pillow for Back, Stomach or Side Sleepers — $44.99

I recently moved into a new apartment, and in doing so decided to start completely from scratch when it comes to my bedding. Mattress, sheets, comforter, pillows—I recently got all of them completely new. I’ll detail my thoughts on the other items in future posts, but for now I want to concentrate on the pillows. Many people are very particular when it comes to their pillows. Typically, I am not one of them. I have never had any problems with pillows, be they ones I purchased or even ones provided at hotels or Airbnbs. So, I assumed it would be a no-brainer to adorn my bed with the pillows with the highest ratings on Amazon. That would be this 2-pack of “Beckham Hotel Collection Bed Pillows,” which comes with a 4.5-star rating after nearly 130,000 customer reviews. Filled with gel memory foam, which is pretty standard these days, they seemed like a surefire winner.

I was immediately disappointed. My first few nights in my new apartment are some of the most uncomfortable nights of sleep I have had in my entire life. And that includes the night I got locked out of my hotel in Italy and had to sneak into a church basement to get some shut-eye.

What was wrong with them? These pillows have absolutely no support! They might be comfortable for spooning if you are that type of side sleeper, but as for resting my head they offered me little in the way of cushion between me and my mattress. In fact, I think it would have been more comfortable if I had slept without a pillow at all. At least that way my neck would not have been craned in a weird way throughout the night.

I can’t say I wasn’t warned. Several people had told me not to get my pillows off Amazon, calling it a crapshoot. No one mentioned this set specifically, but they might as well have, cautioning that with something as crucial to wellness as a pillow, it was of paramount importance to be able to actually feel the thing before committing to it. They were right.

After a week I gave up and resolved to go pillow shopping at an actual retail store. Kohl’s is known for its bed & bath products—towels, sheets, blankets, etc.—so it seemed a natural place to start. They had an entire section devoted to pillows, and you could touch each one. Surprisingly to me, the one that felt the best was also filled with gel-infused memory foam, but I couldn’t argue with my senses and ended up buying it.

That has made all the difference. Sold under the Kohl’s in-house brand “The Big One,” these shapeable memory foam pillows have dramatically improved my sleep quality. They manage to be soft and firm, comfortably giving me the support I need to have an enjoyable nightly trip to the Land of Nod.

Ironically, these pillows are rather poorly reviewed at Kohls.com! They have a dismal 3.7-star rating, albeit from a mere 137 reviewers. That just goes to show you that with something as personal as pillows, you can’t trust others to make the best decisions for you personally.
