Do The AirPods 2 Come In Black?

Seemingly overnight, everyone has AirPods now. If you live in a major city on a nice spring day, you struggle walking one block without seeing half a dozen AirPods; I can’t even remember the last time I went a whole day without espying even one.

Okay, but say by some mathematical improbability (considering Apple has cornered 75 percent of the wireless earbud market) you do not own AirPods. Yet. If that describes you, you were likely biding your time until the second generation of the newly minted status symbol was released this year.

And if you are a cool person, you were probably also waiting — nay, hoping — for Tim Cook’s inevitable announcement that a black version would be available for people looking for a bit more subtlety in how they flaunt their wealth.

Bad news: Apple unveiled the second generation of AirPods last month, and they decidedly do not come in black. In fact, they show no discernible difference in design with the first version of the AirPods.

So the answer is, no, AirPods 2 don’t come in black. Although, if you really want to flex, there is a company called ColorWare that will paint your AirPods 2 black (or any of 64 other color styles) for you — for the very reasonable price of $339. (No, I’m not making this up.) Take that, plebs! Could we possibly be heading toward a future in which having the ugly old white AirPods actually means that you are a poor person? Only time will tell.

Of course, you don’t have to waste money on Apple AirPods at all. TaoTronics just released its latest true wireless earbud model, the TT-BH053s, which, in at least three ways, are technically superior to AirPods. (READ: Our Review Of The TT-BH053 True Wireless Earbuds)

  • The TT-BH053s use silicone ear tips, so they fit in all ear shapes and sizes and will not fall out when you work out.
  • The TT-BH053s are sweatproof and will not get water damaged by your workouts.
  • They are available in black.

The biggest advantage of the TT-BH053, there can be no question, is the price point. Under $40! For True Wireless earbuds that work almost as well as $200 AirPods. The biggest disadvantage? That you don’t look rich. But if you still look good, who cares?
