This $20 White Noise Machine Is Much More
During my Hungarian lesson yesterday, I learned the word “háttérzaj,” which my teacher explained means “white noise.” It is literally translated as “background noise,” but that is beside the point. The point is that it got me thinking of white noise machines, and it prompted an investigation into the most popular one on Amazon.
That would be this one, from a brand called Letsfit:
I’ll admit, I had to do a double-take when I first read the brand name. Did I really want a “Leftist” sleeping aid? Wouldn’t it be better if its politics were boring and non-confrontational, something more along the lines of “low energy” Jeb Bush? Alas, the white noise machine is not “leftist” but made by an anagrammatic brand called “Letsfit.” The name makes a lot more sense when you visit their Amazon storefront and see things like weight benches and massage guns.
Getting to the actual product, the key thing to note is that it is so much more than a white noise machine. White noise is just one of the functions it offers—or, rather, three of them. To be precise, it has 14 sound settings, three of which are white noise. It also has three lullabies, three fan sound effect, and five relaxing natural sounds.
In other words, if you have trouble sleeping, this is a fantastic starter white noise machine. You might not know exactly what kind of noise is going to do the trick to lead you to the Land of Nod, so you can try out the various settings hassle-free. If you are worried about insomnia, you should explore every option available before going to the doctor and asking for sleeping pills.
Now, when I can’t sleep, I usually put on an episode of “Frasier,” but as far as I am aware there is no sound therapy device out there that includes Kelsey Grammer’s soothing voice among its settings. (Get on that, inventors!) In the meantime, one of these soporific sounds will have to do.

I was on Amazon looking for things to do over Thanksgiving with relatives (eventually landing on the brand new game Christmas Categories) when I came across this:
